Logic Classes Offered For 2008-2009 School Year

Introductory Logic

Logic is actually a descriptive word. The whole system that we call "logic" is simply trying to describe the way that our minds work. Understanding that accomplishes two things: it helps us understand better the wonderous way in which God created us; and it helps us to be clear and accurate in the way we express ourselves. Logic is not something you can choose to use or not - as humans, we use it every day. Your real choice is whether you will use it well or poorly. As Christians desiring to express ourselves well for the glory of God, we should desire to use Logic well. To quote from the introduction of the textbook:

"Formal logic is the science and the art of reasoning well. As a science, logic includes discovering and identifying the patterns or rules by which we reason. As an art, logic teaches how to follow those rules, without abusing them in a wooden (and unreasonable) way."

This course is designed to introduce the student to the basics of Logic. It uses the Introductory Logic and Intermediate Logic texts by Douglas Wilson and James Nance, available from Canon Press.

This is a one-hour class which meets once a week (the tutors are always available throughout the week via email, phone, and online message boards set up to give the students an opportunity to discuss the work together and with the tutors). There are two sections of the class (exactly the same) to choose from:

Tuesdays 8-9 am PST

Fridays 8-9 am PST
